MILAN/PARIS -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles pitched a finely balanced merger of equals to Renault on Monday to confront the costs of far-reaching technological and regulatory changes by creating the world's third-biggest automaker.

The deal would create an automaker with a strong presence across key regions, automotive markets and technologies, generating 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion) in annual savings, FCA said in a statement.

PARIS -- Renault has added a new digital instrument panel and larger multimedia screen to the latest version of the Clio subcompact car as part of its efforts to keep the model atop the European small car segment.

MILAN -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is expected to commit to producing new models in Italy, including Jeeps and a Maserati-based Alfa Romeo crossover, union sources said, as the automaker strives to fill underutilized plants and lift profit margins in Europe.
